The contrast between the western perception of Japan, and the traditional realty.
Western people imagine that Japan is the most advanced country in the world, because of its technology industries. We imagine that this also applies to Japanese society, and we assume that gender equality is the norm, and similar to countries such as Scandinavian nations, or western Europe. It has therefore been very surprising for me personally, as a woman, to find that a patriarchal society still exists in Japan, and seems slow to change. There are expectations of women which are very deeply ingrained in Japanese culture, such as cooking for the family, and looking after children. Because of the Japanese 'conformist' nature, perhaps women feel uncomfortable speaking out and challenging these ideas.
Breadwinner/ house-husband
In Europe it is becoming more common for women to be the breadwinner in the household. If the man's salary is lower than his partner's salary, it makes sense for him to stay at home and look after the children while his partner goes back to work. This is no longer considered strange, and 'house-husband' is part of our vocabulary, just as much as 'housewife'. (The Americans also say 'Stay-At-Home-Dad') There is no shame in a woman earning more money than her boyfriend/ husband. Men also take paternity leave when their partner has a baby, but it is much shorter than maternity leave and it's often difficult for men to go back to work and leave their partner with all of the childcare responsibilities.
